Why Do We Start Blogging

Critical Thinking 1 Comment »

I had a dinner with my friends today. One of them is currently working for the most famous game company, EA Star. We discussed about software engineering and the Internet advertising. Something came to my mind, and I started thinking of all the reasons that make people start their blogs. So, here is the result of my “analysis.” I would divide them into 2 mains categories.

1. Non-commercial category

People in this category use their blogs just for having fun with them, nothing related to making money. They often focus on the quality of their writing rather than the number of entries within the blog. One of the features that you can easily recognize non-commercial blogs is there is no ads banner, nor other clicking ads types within the blogs. That is the common feature. However, if we analyze the blogs in this category more, we can still sort them based on the ways the bloggers treat their blogs. There are 3 different blog treatments:

Personal e-Diary
I don’t know why but if i have 10 friends, 3 of them would use their blogs as their personal e-diaries. They post every events that happened to them in their lives, and every emotions from happiness, sadness, love, to hate. Those e-diaries could be set private or public depends on their emotions of that day. Technically, I think those people are going on a different way from the original purpose of blogging.

Means of sharing knowledge
There is no limitation for learning. That’s why some people use their blogs to share their knowledge with others by starting blog entries about the topics they concern. Getting into those blogs, you can see that the authors want either to show off their expertise or to fire up the discussions to get the right answers for themselves. This type of blogs is very similar to forum or discussion board styles.

Methods of networking
Networking seem to be very significant nowadays. So most of us need to make friends and/or keep in touch with them. However, we are so busy to see each other face-to-face in the real life.. How can we still do our business and still know what’s going on with our friends? Talking to all of them on the phone? No way. That is the reason people treat their blogs as the announcement boards to their friends. Anything that they want their friends to know, they will write on their blogs. By that way, we can do networking faster and more effectively.

2. Commercial Purposes

Not surprisingly that people tend to use blogs as a tool to make money because the potential of generating revenues from the Internet business is huge. When you see websites that have ads banners and links they are commercial blogs, not the blogs per se.

People often think that ads are bad because they are annoying and some of them could be harmful to their computers by putting some ad-ware in their PCs. They are somehow misunderstanding about advertisement, or marketing in another term. Bringing ads to the blogs is a good ideas when we want to promote the right products (services) to the right people. Those ads will not be annoying at all if you ignore them. In contrast, they will be very useful when you suddenly find out what you need through those “fliers.”

How many types of blogs do we have in all?

As you can see, we have 2 categories and 3 treatments of blogs. So the combination will give out 6 types of blog we currently have on the Internet community. Let me list them out for you:
1. Non-commercial — personal e-diary
2. Non-commercial — means of sharing knowledge
3. Non-commercial — means of networking
4. Commercial — personal e-diary
5. Commercial — means of sharing knowledge
6. Commercial — means of networking
